Seamus Coleman will remain at Everton next season, says David Moyes: 'I need him here'

Seamus Coleman, the current longest-serving player at a single club in the Premier League, will remain at Everton next season, head coach David Moyes said on Friday.

Coleman, 36, surpassed 16 years with the Merseyside club this season. He was appointed club captain following the departure of Phil Jagielka in 2019, but has played a reduced role this season with just five appearances in all competitions.

“Seamus will stay next season, without doubt,” Moyes said in a pre-match news conference on Friday. “Seamus will be part of the group, I need him here.

“His leadership, his message he has among the players and in the dressing room is so strong it’d be wrong of me to let him go. So one way or the other, Seamus will be here certainly next season.”

Coleman has made 427 appearances for Everton since joining from Sligo Rovers for £60,000 in 2009. He holds the record for the most Premier League appearances for Everton with 368.

The Republic of Ireland captain has been sidelined through injury on several occasions in recent years. Coleman suffered a medial knee ligament injury in 2023 which kept him out for over six months, while a calf issue saw him out for two months this term, after playing 90 minutes in his side’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City in December.

Coleman’s contract is set to expire this summer, after he signed a one-year contract extension in June 2024. Moyes’ comments on Friday mean the right back is set to captain Everton in their first season at their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium.
