Riccardo Calafiori returning to Arsenal after injury on international duty

Riccardo Calafiori is returning to Arsenal after picking up an injury on international duty with Italy.

The defender, a £42million ($54m) summer signing from Bologna, suffered an apparent calf issue in the win over France on Friday.

Calafiori collided with Ousmane Dembele in the second-half of the game at the Parc des Princes and had to be withdrawn.

Head coach Luciano Spalletti had expressed hope the 22-year-old would be able to be involved against Israel on Monday.

However, it has now been confirmed that the player will return to London for assessment.

Arsenal face north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta is already without another of his new arrivals with Mikel Merino sidelined with a shoulder injury while fellow midfielder Declan Rice is suspended after being sent off against Brighton & Hove Albion in the last game prior to the international break.

Calafiori has made two appearances for his new club, coming on as a substitute in the win over Aston Villa and the draw with Brighton.

Arsenal are fourth in the early Premier League table, two points behind Manchester City, who lead after three wins from three.
