But then a sprinkle of that magic Bernabeu dust saw the reigning champions turned the game around emphatically in the final half hour.
Vinicius Jr stole the show with a sublime hat-trick while there were also goals from Antonio Rudiger and Lucas Vazquez.
Dare I say a Ballon d’Or-worthy performance from the 24-year-old Brazilian.
