The Baltimore Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde on Saturday, the most drastic move yet in hopes of spurring a turnaround from what has arguably been baseball’s most disappointing team.
The Orioles entered the season with high expectations and a roster loaded with young talent, the fruit of a painful rebuild that Hyde had overseen during its darkest and earliest days. After two consecutive playoff appearances, the Orioles had their sights on capturing the AL East for the second time in three years.
Instead, they entered play on Saturday at 15-28, the fourth-worst record in baseball and 10 1/2 games out of first place in the division. Baltimore pitching has posted a 5.33 ERA, the worst in the American League.
“As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility,” said Orioles general manager Mike Elias. “Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.”
The Orioles also dismissed Tim Cossins, who was the major league field coordinator and catching instructor. Third base coach Tony Mansolino will take over as interim manager.
Hyde, 51, went 421-493 with the Orioles, who gave him his first job as a big league manager.
