NHL player Evander Kane and his ex-wife, Anna Kane, had a tumultuous relationship before she filed for divorce in 2021.
Evander and Anna tied the knot in 2018. One year after getting married, the duo faced tragedy when Anna suffered a pregnancy loss at 26 weeks.
“As expecting parents, this past week has broken us. We’ve received a ton of support from family and friends, and we truly want to thank them,” Evander wrote in a March 2019 statement via X. “We would also like to thank our Sharks Family for their support, compassion, and allowing me to be with my family during this time. My family and I are heartbroken. Words cannot express how excited we were to welcome our baby girl into the world and watch her grow.”
After losing daughter Eva, the pair went on to welcome daughter Kensington in July 2020. One year later, Anna filed for divorce from Evander in July 2021.
Following their divorce, Anna and Evander had several disputes including allegations of gambling addiction, financial neglect and accusations of abuse. In December 2021, Evander was given sole custody of their daughter Kensington with Anna receiving supervised visitation rights contingent on completing a psychiatric evaluation.
Years later, Anna was in the news again when she revealed she was one of the women who filed a sexual assault case against Diddy, claiming the musician and his associates assaulted her when she was 17 in 2008. “I had hoped to use a pseudonym in pursuing justice for what happened to me as a teenager,” Anna told Us Weekly at the time. “Defendants’ demand that I use my name was an attempt to intimidate me, but I am not intimidated. I am prepared to proceed and hold accountable those who have harmed me.”
At the time the lawsuit was first filed in 2023, Diddy denied the claims. “Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday. Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged,” he said in part at the time. “I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”

“It definitely makes you realize what’s important,” Evander told reporters in September 2019. “Every minute, you had different emotions, different feelings. My wife, seeing what she went through, it was harder on nobody else but her. It takes a real big toll on you, and I had to step away for a week there, in order to regroup and gather myself. And to be there for my wife.”

Anna took to social media to make serious allegations against Evander, suggesting that he lost NHL games on purpose to support his alleged gambling addiction.
“How does the NHL let a compulsive gambling addict still play when he’s obviously throwing games to win money? Hmm maybe someone needs to address this,” Anna, who claimed she was pregnant with the pair’s second child, wrote via Instagram Stories. “Can someone ask [commissioner] Gary Bettman how they let a player gamble on his own games? Bet and win with bookies on his own games?”
Anna went on to allege that Evander “did not call or text her” for seven days while partying in Europe.
“But at the same time, you tell me our house is being taken by the bank. But you do not come to help your pregnant wife pack or help with anything at all, you have enough money to party and stay in hotels in Europe and go to dinners every night,” she said. “But I can’t buy my daughter formula and you force me to sell my wedding ring to survive as you party every day every night, never calling your daughter and never asking not even one time how I’m doing myself.”
Evander then defended himself on social media, calling the accusations “false.”
“I have NEVER gambled/bet on Hockey, NEVER gambled/bet on a Sharks game, NEVER gambled/bet on any of my games and NEVER thrown a hockey game,” he shared in a social media statement. “The facts are I personally had my best season of my career last year and was the most consistent I’ve been throughout my season, I’m proud of that. I love the game of Hockey and would never do any of what was alleged. I look forward to cooperating fully with the league’s investigation, having my name cleared and looking forward to this upcoming season.”
He also noted that he loves his daughter and always has “taken care” of her in “every way possible.”
“I have always made sure her mother has had everything she’s needed and more,” he wrote. “I have tried to de-escalate our divorce issues and be as civil and calm as anyone in this position could. I have tried to set up FaceTime calls but not every day as I would like to because of being restricted by her mom. She has refused me to see her and had unfortunately tried to use my daughter as leverage. I will continue to always take care of my family, that goes without question.”
The NHL went on to launch an investigation on the claims, however, they were ultimately dismissed.
December 2021
After allegations that Anna was an unfit mother, Evander was granted sole custody of Kensington, per New York Post. The judge ruled that Anna will have professionally supervised visits with their daughter pending her psychiatric evaluation.
“The concerns in Court was and is Ms. Kane’s mental stability, potential untreated mental health issues and the effects of the same on the parties’ young daughter,” Evander’s legal counsel, Travis Krepelka, shared in a statement to the New York Post.
Following the court’s ruling, Anna allegedly took to social media to share a video of Evander pointing a loaded gun at her as well as audio of a November 2020 exchange where Anna claimed that Evander had struck their daughter.
In a December 3 filing, Evander offered evidence that the loaded gun video was from a photo shoot and claimed that he never hit their daughter.
“Particularly and notably egregious in [Anna’s social media posts on Dec. 1], aside from the not credible and defamatory nature of the statement, is her stated intention to target me, hurt me, and a call to attention to the public at large,” he explained in court statement, per San Jose Hockey Now, adding that he seeks to get a restraining order against her. “She seeks only to cause me pain — privately and publicly. I am afraid she may come to myr residence, which is confidential, and try to harm me or take [our daughter].”
The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara granted Evander’s request for a restraining order.
