Looking at the NFL Week 4 odds, it should feel good to be the San Francisco 49ers, the biggest favorites of the week ahead of a meeting with the New England Patriots. But then, the way this season is going, you may be flirting with just fading the favorites and calling it a day. September isn’t even over, and we haven’t had a week without a stunner.
Once again, last week’s biggest favorites, a familiar face, fell when the Niners lost to the Los Angeles Rams — a reminder to keep checking on the injury report when monitoring your bets. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a touchdown favorite against the Denver Broncos and fell 26-7 in perhaps the most baffling result of Week 3. Meanwhile, a refreshed Carolina Panthers team got its first check in the win column with Andy Dalton at center. It was against the internally conflicted Las Vegas Raiders, but hey, a win is a win.
Meanwhile, the undefeated list is getting slim, with a few surprise contenders still standing. The Seahawks have had some luck in terms of scheduling but have yet to take a loss. Will a Monday night battle on the road against the 4.5-point favorite Detroit Lions this week expose cracks in the wall?
The Vikings, too, are looking good in their Sam Darnold era with a 34-7 stunner over Houston. With a division rivalry game against the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field, the Vikings face another test of their mettle. So far, they’ve risen to those tests. But the Packers, too, have been exceeding expectations with Malik Willis under center and are 3-point favorites. If Jordan Love comes back this week, it’s hard to know if the line will change much; Willis has been great thus far, thanks in large part to coaching. Mike Sando calls the NFC North the NFL’s most interesting division and quotes sources in the league favoring the Vikings’, thanks to its stellar defense.
Justin Fields is another cast-off quarterback leading his team to a 3-0 start. The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the road this week in Indianapolis in a game with one of the closest point spreads of the week, with the Steelers claiming a 1.5-point edge over the Colts.
There are four other matchups with 1.5-point spreads as of Monday. An NFC South banger between two veteran quarterbacks sees the New Orleans Saints slight underdogs to the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Two struggling teams face off in what could be an ugly matchup between the Cleveland Browns on the road against the Raiders. The Browns need a vibe check after getting bested by the New York Giants and a sensational performance from first-round pick Malik Nabers.
Then, it’s a tale of quarterback troubles with Will Levis and the winless Tennessee Titans on the road against the Tua Tagovailoa-less Miami Dolphins, who got absolutely crushed in Week 3 without their star QB.
Other big favorites this week, apart from the aforementioned 49ers? Unsurprisingly, the Kansas City Chiefs are more than a touchdown favorite over the Los Angeles Chargers, who may be without Justin Herbert. The rolling New York Jets are also more than a touchdown favorite against the Denver Broncos; we’ll find out if the Broncos’ win in Week 3 was a fluke or a growth trend.
