With Liverpool’s season headed for a very obvious conclusion following defeats in the Champions League and the FA Cup, the remaining intrigue around their season focused on whether they would be able to retain iconic veterans Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, whose contracts were set to expire this summer.
The 32-year-old Salah is having one of the best Premier League campaigns ever, despite cooling off a bit in recent weeks.
While Van Dijk, 33, also remains one of Liverpool’s best players and one of the Premier League’s most rugged defenders, in addition to being on the verge of winning his first league title as club captain.
After a nearly year-long saga which grew tense at times, Salah and Liverpool confirmed a new two-year contract on April 11.
Van Dijk then seemed to erase all doubt about his status by kissing the Liverpool badge on his jersey after scoring a late winner against West Ham at Anfield two days later. The Dutch international’s own two-year extension with Liverpool became official on Thursday.
The two will continue to build upon their stellar first season under manager Arne Slot for at least the immediate future.
