Chelsea await updates on Malo Gusto 'muscle problem' suffered in Crystal Palace draw

Chelsea will await further updates after Malo Gusto picked up what they fear could be a muscle problem in the draw with Crystal Palace.

The full-back went down late on in the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge and could no longer continue, being replaced by Mykhailo Mudryk for the final 15 minutes.

Central defender Wesley Fofana deputised for the remainder of the game with Enzo Fernandez shifted back away from his usual midfield role.

It remains to be seen exactly what the injury is or if he will miss any time following the upcoming international break.

Club captain Reece James is yet to play this season after picking up a hamstring issue before the campaign started while the likes of Trevoh Chalobah and Alfie Gilchrist, two players who have been deployed at right-back before, have departed the club on loan.

Fellow France international Axel Disasi could be an option to come in while midfielder Moises Caicedo did spend time there during the pre-season.

“With Malo, we will see now what happens,” head coach Enzo Maresca said after the game. “It looks like a muscle problem, so we will see.”

The Briefing: Chelsea 1 Palace 1 – Why Maresca’s men lost control; Gusto concerns; left-flank questions

Chelsea took the lead in the first half through Nicolas Jackson before they were pegged back after the break by an Eberechi Eze strike.

That goal ensured the wait for a Premier League clean sheet continues after conceding twice in each of the opening two matches, a defeat to Manchester City and win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Maresca insists he is not overly worried about any kind of trend, but is keen to see his side improve.

“It does not matter if it’s a clean sheet or not,” he added. “I also like to analyse the game, in today’s game, we concede the goal but we did not concede any more chances.

“So it is not about some defensive problem that we need to solve. For sure, we need to do many things better. But today was not a clean sheet, not because the team was not good.

“In the end, you can concede one shot on goal — unfortunately it was a fantastic goal so it was impossible for Robert (Sanchez).

“I am always concerned because I try to see things to improve the team. But it is not because we didn’t have any clean sheet today.”

Chelsea return to action in a fortnight against Bournemouth on Saturday, September 14.
