Blackhawks' new NHL Winter Classic jersey leaks online: First look

With four NHL Winter Classics, two Stadium Series games and two Reverse Retro jerseys in the last 15 years, the Chicago Blackhawks are no strangers to new twists on their historic look. But their latest special jersey is the first to be dominated by their primary color, red.

A source involved with the release confirmed that the jersey leaked by Icethetics is indeed what the Blackhawks will wear on New Year’s Eve at Chicago’s Wrigley Field against the St. Louis Blues in the Winter Classic. The source was granted anonymity because the jerseys were not yet released.

The jersey features a new take on the historic encircled Blackhawks crest, a regular feature until the ring was dropped in the 1950s. With black and off-white striping across the chest and the crossed-tomahawks secondary logo on the sleeves, it’s distinct but familiar.

The Blackhawks’ fifth Winter Classic will be held on Dec. 31 instead of the traditional New Year’s Day to avoid conflicting with the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. It’s the second Winter Classic to be held at Wrigley Field; the Blackhawks lost to Detroit 6-4 in the 2009 event. The special jerseys from that game remain popular to this day.
